Yes. That error means the file type was not successfully registered. You shouldn&#039;t have to go into the Registry as it is just performing the same step as adding the File Type within the Search Service.  But either method will work. The other element to troubleshoot if a filetype icon doesn&#039;t show is to be certain that the DOCICON.XML file is absolutely correct.

Just to clarify for readers. OCR is not required for text-based PDFs, the PDF iFilter will word-break and index the content, that&#039;s what it is intended for. OCR would be required for hand-writing recognition and text-based TIFF files (e.g. documents scanned as a TIFF instead of as a PDF).</description>
